Why screenshots get lost
macOS saves every screenshot as a loose file named after the moment you took it. A week later the Desktop holds dozens of them, with no record of the page they came from and nothing useful to search for. The one you need is in there somewhere.
A screenshot organizer fixes this at the moment of capture: the image goes into a library, with its context, instead of into a folder you’ll have to sort later.
Save them as you take them
- ⌃⇧4 captures a region and saves it along with the website and app it came from. Press Space for the whole window.
- ⌘⇧4 works as always. Take screenshots the way you usually do; a number appears in the menu bar, and one click saves them.
- ⌃⇧V saves what you copied: the image you just copied in Figma, Slack or your browser.
Quick Save suggests a board and flags duplicates. If you prefer, save automatically or turn detection off.
Every screenshot remembers where it came from
Capture from a browser and Ambrel also stores the page you were on: its link, title and icon. One click takes you back to it, and the Sites view gathers everything you saved from each website.
It works with Safari, Orion, Google Chrome, Arc, Dia, Brave, Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi, Comet and ChatGPT Atlas. Firefox and Zen don’t let other apps read the open page, so captures from them are saved without it.
Find any screenshot by what’s in it
Ambrel reads the text in every image, recognizes what it shows and extracts its colors, all on your Mac. Search for a word that was on the screen, a price or a name, pick a color, or open a capture to see the ones that look most like it.

A board for every project
Give each project a board with its own name and color, add tags and favorites, and leave the rest in Inbox to decide later. Browse a board as a grid, or switch to a canvas to arrange images with titles and notes.
Bring the ones you already have
Drag your old screenshots in, paste them or import them. Links and images sent from the macOS Share and Services menus land in the same library.
Light on disk, and yours
Captures are stored as HEIC: up to 90% smaller than PNG, with no loss you’d notice. When you copy or drag one into another app, it arrives as PNG.
The library lives on your Mac, with no account. Export it to folders by board, with Finder tags, whenever you want, or keep separate libraries and move them to another disk.
